Using Shop with AI agents and agentic platforms

You can use Shop with AI agents and agentic platforms in different ways. For example, you can connect the Shop skill to a personal AI agent, such as OpenClaw or Hermes, or you can connect your Shop account to an agentic shopping platform. These experiences can help you search for products, prepare checkouts, review purchases, place orders, track deliveries, and check a store's return policy. Some features require you to sign in to your Shop account or approve a connection through Shop. The features available might differ depending on the agent, platform, online store, payment method, and transaction.

Ways to use Shop with AI agents and agentic platforms

You can use Shop with an AI agent or agentic platform in either of the following ways:

  • Connect the Shop skill to a personal agent: You can connect the Shop skill to a personal AI agent, such as OpenClaw or Hermes. The personal agent can use the Shop skill to help you search, prepare checkouts, track orders, check return policies, or request payment approval through Shop.
  • Connect your Shop account to an agentic platform: You can connect your Shop account to a supported agentic platform, such as Muse. The platform can use your Shop account connection to help you shop, prepare checkout, request payment approval, or complete approved purchases.

In both cases, you control whether to connect Shop, and you can manage or disconnect access in your Connections settings.

Considerations for connecting Shop to your personal agent or agentic platform

Review the following considerations before connecting Shop to a personal agent or agentic platform:

  • By using Shop with an AI agent or agentic platform, you accept and agree to the Shopify Consumer Terms of Service.
  • Shop isn't responsible for how your agent or an agentic platform uses your information or follows your instructions.
  • Agents and agentic platforms might make mistakes, misunderstand your instructions, or display inaccurate product, price, tax, shipping, availability, or return information. Review purchase details carefully before approving payment.
  • Agents and agentic platforms can't guarantee product quality or provide legal or financial advice.
  • Shop integrations are for personal, individual shopping use only, unless separately authorized by Shopify.
  • By default, your agent or agentic platform can prepare a checkout for you with your name, contact information, shipping address, and items. When an agent or agentic platform makes a purchase for you, it also agrees to the store's shipping, refund, return, and cancellation policies on your behalf. Review those policies and purchase details before approving payment and consider instructing your agent or agentic platform not to purchase from stores with policies that you wouldn't accept, such as prompting with "Don't buy items from stores that don't accept returns".
  • You're responsible for purchases that you approve through an agent or agentic platform, and orders are processed as though you made the purchase yourself. If you approved a purchase, or gave the agent or platform permission to make it, then your attempt to dispute the transaction might be unsuccessful.
  • For some purchases, Shop might use a limited-use payment credential, such as a token or one-time virtual card, instead of sharing your underlying payment method details. Shop may then charge your selected payment method for the approved purchase amount. In these cases, Shop might pay the online store on your behalf and then charge your selected payment method for the approved purchase amount. The charge to your selected payment method displays on your card, bank, or payment method statement as "SHOPPAY*[store name]" or a similar descriptor.
  • The store that you purchase from remains responsible for fulfilling your order and handling returns, refunds, warranties, and product support.

Unauthorized use of the Shop skill for personal agents

You can't use the Shop skill for any of the following purposes:

  • Circumventing rate limits or Cloudflare bot protection.
  • Building commercial products, services, or platforms using Shop data or features, including the following uses:
    • Bulk downloading, copying, or reselling product catalog data.
    • Using data from the Shop skill to train or improve AI models.
    • Accessing, collecting, or aggregating data from more than one Shop user.
    • Operating as an automated service, background process, or intermediary that accesses user account data without the Shop account holder actively directing the agent on their own device.

Shop account information shared with your personal agent or agentic platforms

When you connect the Shop skill to a personal agent or connect your Shop account to an agentic platform, Shop might share certain Shop account information to help provide shopping, checkout, payment approval, order tracking, return, and reorder features. Some information might be shared when you connect, and other information might be shared later when needed to prepare or complete a purchase.

The information being shared is displayed at the time of connection, and might include the following details:

  • Your name, email address, phone number, and shipping and billing address from your Shop profile
  • Limited payment method details, such as card brand, payment method type, and the last four digits of a saved payment method
  • Purchase approval details, such as the online store, items, subtotal, taxes, shipping costs, fees, and total amount
  • Order information in Shop, to support order tracking, return inquiries, and reordering
  • Personalized search results based on your Shop profile and personalization settings

After your Shop account information is shared with a third-party AI agent or agentic platform, that third party's use of the information is governed by its own terms, privacy policy, settings, and your instructions. You can disconnect an agent or agentic platform's access from Shop at any time, but disconnecting won't delete information that was already shared.

Capabilities of Shop and agentic integrations

When you connect the Shop skill to your personal agent, or connect your Shop account to an agentic platform, you can do the following depending on the features available:

  • Search for products: Ask your agent or agentic platform to search using natural language, such as "waterproof hiking boots under $150" or "gift ideas for someone who loves baking". If you're signed in to Shop, then products are ranked based on your personalization settings.
  • Prepare checkouts: Ask your agent or agentic platform to prepare checkouts for your review so that you can buy products with all of your information prefilled.
  • Place orders: Approve purchases through Shop so your agent or agentic platform can complete checkout with the online store.
  • Reorder products: Ask your agent or agentic platform to reorder a product that you've bought before.
  • Track orders: Ask your agent or agentic platform about the status of your recent orders. Order data comes from your Shop account, including orders from any store where you've received email receipts at the email address that you have connected to Shop.
  • Check return policies: Ask your agent or agentic platform whether an item is returnable. Your agent reads the store's published return policy and tells you the return window. To start a return, refer to Managing returns in the Shop app.
  • Give your agent permission to purchase a product on your behalf using your Shop account: Agents and agentic platforms can complete purchases with your approval. In some cases, you can set spending limits and allow your personal agent to complete purchases on your behalf.

Connecting Shop to your personal agent or an agentic platform

You can connect Shop to a personal agent or agentic platform in the following ways:

  • Connecting to a personal agent: Provide the Shop skill link to your AI agent, and then ask the agent to install the skill.
  • Connecting to an agentic platform: Follow the prompts in the agentic platform to connect your Shop account.

Some features such as tracking orders and making purchases require you to sign in to Shop. When this is required, you're sent a sign-in link to open on your device's browser. After you verify your connection, your agent or connected agentic platform stays connected until it's disconnected, after which point you'll need to connect again.

Only sign in or connect through Shop's authorization screen. Don't share your Shop passkey, verification code, or Shop security credentials directly with an agent, platform, or developer.

Manage your connection and purchase permissions

By default, AI agents and connected agentic platforms prepare checkouts with your information prefilled so that you can review and approve every purchase.

You can allow your personal agent to place orders on your behalf without manually approving each purchase by turning on the Allow agent to pay for me setting and setting a weekly, monthly, or total budget.

This setting is optional, and you can revoke this permission at any time.

Steps:

  1. From the Shop app in the home tab, tap the Account icon.

  2. Tap Connections.

  3. Tap the personal agent that you're connected to.

  4. Turn the Pay without approval setting on or off.

  5. Optional: If you turn the Allow agent to pay for me setting on, then set up your budget:

    1. Select a Monthly, Weekly, or Total budget.
    2. Select a preset budget amount, or tap Custom to set your own amount.

After you set your budget, you can return to this setting to view how much of your budget remains after you start making purchases with your agent.

Your agent will initially attempt to charge the last-used card in your Shop wallet, and then use other saved, valid cards if the payment attempt fails. If all cards fail, then the checkout fails, and the agent receives a failure message. You're responsible for purchases made within the permissions and budget that you set, even if the agent misunderstands your instructions or buys something you didn't expect. If you don't agree with a purchase made within those permissions, then your attempt to dispute the transaction might be unsuccessful.

You can disconnect an AI agent or connected agentic platform at any time in your Connections settings.
