Navigating the ins and outs of refunds involving Shop Cash can be complex, whether Shop Cash was earned or used in your transactions. This article breaks down everything you need to know to understand the implications on your Shop Cash balance when processing a refund.
Refunds on orders that earned Shop Cash
If you earn Shop Cash on an order, and the order is later refunded, then the Shop Cash that you earned from that order is deducted from your Shop Cash balance. This includes Shop Cash that you've already spent.

Refunds on orders that were paid for using Shop Cash
When you receive a refund on an order where you used Shop Cash, the Shop Cash is returned to your balance. However, there are some exceptions and limitations:
- Refunds for orders with Shop offers: You don't receive the increased value of the Shop offer back. You only get back the amount of Shop Cash you initially used from your balance. For example, if you have $5 in Shop Cash and use an offer to increase the value to $25 of Shop Cash on the order, and the order is refunded, then you'll be credited back $5.
- Expired Shop Cash: You won't receive expired Shop Cash back to your balance after you receive a refund.
Full refunds
With full refunds, you're refunded in the same way you paid for the order, except for expired Shop Cash. Expired Shop Cash is not credited back to your balance after a refund is issued. The following is a detailed breakdown of how full refunds are processed when Shop Cash is involved:
- Initial refund process: When you receive a full refund on an order that used Shop Cash as part of the payment, the refund is initially applied to your Shop Pay payment method.
- Subsequent refunds: Any remaining amount after the initial refund is then returned to your Shop Cash balance, ensuring that you're reimbursed appropriately.
Partial refunds
With partial refunds, the amount of Shop Cash you get back depends on the store's refund process:
- Refund allocation: The store decides the portion of the refund that goes back to your Shop Pay payment method and the amount that is restored to your Shop Cash balance.
- Processing order refunds: If the refund is from an order where Shop Cash was applied without any special offer, then the refund will first apply to your payment card. Subsequently, any leftover amount will be credited back to your Shop Cash.
- Refund limits: The refund amount credited to either your Shop Pay payment method or Shop Cash balance will not exceed the original amount used in each respective payment type.
- Refund processing time: The refunded Shop Cash may take up to 48 hours to reflect in your balance once the online store has processed the refund.
